The StableNet® discovery engine has a unique mechanism that, when discovering a network intelligently, prioritizes each device it discovers and assigns a weight-value to that device that automatically maps its hierarchical relationship and overall importance within the network topology.

How Discovery Works

Discovery of a network includes:

StableNet® has the ability to perform real-time traffic analysis using the ‘Analyzer’, ‘Group Analyzer’, and ‘NetFlow’ functionality. The StableNet® Agent, a 64bit application supported on Windows and Linux, collects and processes flows. As a distributed flow collector, it allows virtually unlimited scalability. The StableNet® Server acts as a centralized reporting system. The raw data of the flow is preprocessed; only highly compressed data is stored in the central data mart. One flow collector can handle several gigabytes of flow data per hour, analyze historic flow data, and other flow details, including all NetFlow v9/IPFIX.

The NCCM module is a fully integrated component of the StableNet® family, using the same common core services, device interaction layers, and user interfaces as the current products, which delivers a true ‘single product’ management solution with a greatly reduced time for user familiarization.
This module is a core component of any companies’ ITIL service and change management implementation. Using a powerful device scripting engine support for new devices can be enabled within the product quickly and easily.

For devices under management, all configurations are captured and historically versioned as soon as a change has been detected, even when that change was made from outside the product through other management ports or products. In addition, snapshot device troubleshooting information can be captured during the same interaction process.

As the StableNet® NCCM module captures every configuration change for a device within its database, the time to identify, analyze, and rectify change-related faults is greatly reduced as the operator is given the answers to the key questions of who, what, where, and when. Historical device configurations can be used to restore devices to a previous known state with only a few mouse clicks.

Organizations can never truly eliminate the ad-hoc changes to network device configurations but with the StableNet® NCCM module, the impact of these changes can be mitigated. Larger scale changes can be structured into change process jobs for controlled execution and these changes can be rolled back at any time. Configuration changes can be made either using simple CLI commands or using more powerful logic-based snippets and templates which enable less technical staff to make routine changes.

Key to managing device configurations is ensuring that they meet the corporate standards which can include, for example, security settings and software version requirements. The StableNet® NCCM module allows these configuration standards to be built into policies that can be applied to devices and action can be taken if a device is in violation of these policies. Policies can be built using standard pattern matching techniques, advanced scriptlets for repetition checking, and full script logic. This allows the user to create policies to cover even the most complex requirements using while-if-then-else logic to eliminate false-positives and false-negatives.

By extending the use of policies, an organization using the StableNet® NCCM module can build rules to locate devices within their estate that have vulnerabilities as defined for example by hardware manufacturer notifications or national agencies announcements such as US-CERT. Infosim customers, with the StableNet® NCCM module, can take advantage of a new service on an annual contract basis which automatically distributes new vulnerability notifications directly to the customer. This will ensure that the customer network is immediately checked for any new vulnerability notifications and will reduce the time the network is exposed to potential danger.

Network infrastructure devices that have passed their End-of-Life or End-of-Service expose the customer to an unacceptable risk due lack of support in the event of a failure. Once a report has been generated, it can be published in different formats. StableNet® supports PDF, HTML, and MHT formats. Report publishing is possible via the scheduler function, e.g. hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, or on demand. The on-demand access is supported by the StableNet® portal. If desired, reports can be dispatched by email. StableNet® uses the measure-once-report-many-times methodology. This means that a single measurement can be included in any number of reports.

The StableNet® reporting subsystem is extremely scalable and able to generate targeted reports for a large audience, multiple groups, etc. The ‘look-and-feel’ and the CI (Configuration Interface) of the reporting engine is completely customizable and therefore, templates you wish to tailor and brand is easily possible using the StableNet® reporting engine.
