Motivation<\/p>\n

The ongoing digitalization of our modern world requires a stable, high-quality network connection. At the same time, existing networks can be very large and dynamic. Often it is unclear how changes and anomalies in the network affect its total performance leading to a wide array of questions about further network expansions. A network digital twin allows to simulate various network scenarios to predict the performance and costs of changes to the network.<\/p>\n

Project Goal<\/p>\n

The primary goal of N-DOLLI is to create a virtual replica, or network digital twin (NDT), of a communication network by virtualizing its key components. Initially, this NDT will be a simulated mirror image of the physical counterpart based on its data up to some reasonable level of detail. This includes that important quality of service (QoS) metrics, e.g. data transfer rate, latency and jitter, should approximately be reflected in the NDT.<\/p>\n

The NDT then becomes a useful toolbox for a whole range of studies. Changes in the digital world involve fewer hurdles and are much less time-consuming and therefore less expensive than comparable changes in the physical world. This makes it an efficient solution for bottleneck analyses, e.g. in connection with a higher traffic volume or an expansion\/reduction in the number of network devices.<\/p>\n

Put simply, the NDT should ultimately be a tool for predicting the future in a communication network. To this end, verifications against real networks will have to be performed throughout the project.

Infosim\u00ae<\/sup> – Our Focus<\/p>\n

Infosim\u00ae<\/sup> focuses on several research areas in N-DOLLI. Based on our expertise in automated network management, we develop necessary interfaces for the integration of the NDT in the network management system. In addition to that, we are involved in the design of artificial network topologies, as well as the validation that these closely resemble real world communication networks in terms of data volume, devices and QoS.
